The robust plants readily support the large blooms, though staking is suggested to keep the flowers upright, where they can be readily admired by human eyes. 'Pennhill Watermelon' is a true delight, and it will produce flowers from mid summer until frost if the spent flowers are trimmed off weekly.

Dahlias are perennial in zones 8-10, but in cooler zones, tubers can be dug after frost comes, stored over winter, then re-planted the following spring.
